Democrat duo Kamala Harris and Tim Walts will face off against Republican duo Donald Trump and Jay Vance in the election

On Tuesday, 6 August, presidential candidate Kamala Harris chose her vice presidential running mate, CNN.

Since the choice of U.S. vice presidential candidates depends on the good it will do in the election, there was an expectation that Harris would pick the Pennsylvania candidate. This "swing state" has 19 electors and its governor could give a good boost to Kamala's ratings.

However, Kamala chose a governor from Minnesota, which has only 10 electors. Even Arizona has more - 11. Besides, American experts do not consider Minnesota to be a swing state, and the Democrats' positions there are quite strong. Therefore, the choice of a vice-presidential candidate was unexpected for many.

It is assumed that the reason for the rejection of the governor of Pennsylvania was his position on Israel. Josh Shapiro actively supports Israel in the Middle East, while Harris wants to attract the votes of Muslims, who are more numerous in the US than Jews. So it was decided to settle on Minnesota.

Walts' candidacy is also a curtsy to the "white-collar" states of the Midwest as a counterbalance to the Republican vice-president.

What's known about him.

tim Walz, 60, is married with two children. Born in the state of Nebraska. Joined the U.S. National Guard when he was 17. Served more than twenty years, after his discharge he worked as a schoolteacher.

Defended women's rights to abortion and organised free meals for children in schools, which is rare in the USA.

Biden's attitude towards Ukraine is completely in line with Biden's vision, but as a former military man, he may have more radical options for military aid to Kiev.

At the outset of the full-scale invasion, Walts was one of the first gubernatorial candidates to pass a ban on businesses from the state of Minnesota from doing business in Russia and Belarus through legislation.

Since Harris was Biden's vice president, it is likely she will continue her measured support for Ukraine for fear of escalation from Russia.
