On the night of 5 October, Russia launched a massive strike on Ukraine, launching more than 50 missiles and about 500 attack drones. This was reported by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, stressing that the attack was combined and covered dozens of regions of the country.

Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Zaporizhzhya, Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv, Kherson, Odessa and Kirovograd regions came under fire. Cruise missiles, Shahed attack drones and aerial ballistic Daggers were used.

According to the latest reports, five people were killed in the attack and about ten others were injured. Rescue and recovery operations are continuing on the ground, with all relevant services involved. President Zelensky said that he is keeping the situation under control, receiving daily reports from Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, Minister of Community and Territory Development Oleksiy Kuleba, heads of regional military administrations and Naftohaz management.

Russia is again hitting infrastructure and everything that ensures normal life for people. We need more effective defence, especially in terms of air defence, in order to take away the meaning of this air terror," Zelenskyy said.

He emphasised that a unilateral ceasefire in the skies was possible and could open the way to real diplomacy. He said the US and Europe should make efforts to force Russian dictator Vladimir Putin to stop.

Lviv suffered particularly during the attack: explosions were heard continuously for several hours, part of the city was left without electricity, the districts of Ryasnoye and Levandovka were affected. Fires broke out in the city, including in the Sparrow industrial park, which, according to mayor Andriy Sadovyy, is a civilian facility without a military component.

City officials are advising residents to stay indoors, close windows and not go outside immediately after the air alert ends. Rescue services are working on the ground to eliminate the consequences of the attack.
