- Red wine: What are the real health pros and cons

Red wine has a special place in world culture and history. However, its health benefits and harms remain the subject of scientific research and public debate.
The benefits of red wine
Red wine contains many health benefits, including antioxidants such as resveratrol and flavonoids, which help fight oxidative stress in the body. A 2011 study found that "resveratrol can improve heart health by preventing the formation of free radicals that can cause heart disease" (Zordoky, Robertson, Dyck, 2015).
Red wine can also improve heart health by increasing 'good' cholesterol (HDL) and reducing 'bad' cholesterol (LDL). A study published in Nature in 2015 found that moderate consumption of red wine can improve cholesterol levels, thanks to the polyphenols found in grapes (Wang et al., 2015)
In addition, regular moderate consumption of red wine can prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. This is confirmed by a study published in the European Journal of Epidemiology in 2019 (Pang et al., 2019)
Harms of red wine
However, we must not forget the harm that red wine can do when consumed in excess. Alcohol abuse can lead to the development of alcoholism, cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease, impaired brain function and other health problems. A 2018 study confirmed that "alcohol consumption is associated with an increased risk of developing various cancers, including breast and oral cancer" (LoConte, Brewster, Kaur, Merrill, Alberg, 2018).
In addition, even moderate alcohol consumption can be harmful for some people, including pregnant women, people with certain liver and heart conditions, and those taking certain medications.
How much red wine you can drink in a day
Moderate alcohol consumption, including red wine, is generally defined as up to one standard glass of wine a day for women and up to two glasses a day for men. A standard glass of wine usually contains around 14 grams of pure alcohol, which equates to 148ml (5oz) of wine with an alcohol content of 12%.
However, it is important to remember that even moderate alcohol consumption can be unsafe for some people, including pregnant women, people with certain diseases or conditions, and those taking certain medications.
You should always discuss alcohol consumption with your health care professional to ensure that it is safe for your particular health and circumstances.
In general, moderate consumption of red wine can have some health benefits due to its polyphenol and antioxidant content. However, alcohol consumption must be limited and controlled to avoid serious health problems.
