Baking cheese rolls doesn't have to be a daunting task.
With the simplest of ingredients and easy-to-follow steps, you can bake cheese rolls that will be flying off the table in no time.
This recipe is suitable for beginners and experienced cooks alike.
Ingredients:
- 3 cups wholemeal flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 package (about 2 1/4 teaspoons) of powdered yeast
- 1 cup warm milk (not hot, about 40 degrees)
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or a mix of your favourite cheeses)
- 1 egg to coat
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the dough
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Stir until the dry ingredients are well blended.
Step 2: Add the milk and oil
Pour warm milk and melted butter into the dry ingredients. Stir the mixture until a soft dough forms.
Step 3: Knead the dough
On a lightly floured surface, knead the dough for 5-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Step 4: Allow the dough to rise
Place the dough in an oiled bowl, making sure to turn the dough so that it is covered with a thin layer of oil. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
Step 5: Add the cheese
Once the dough has risen, knead it to remove any air bubbles. Flatten it on a lightly floured surface and sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly on top. Fold the dough over several times, and knead to make sure the cheese is evenly distributed.
Step 6: Shape the rolls
Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving enough room to expand.
Step 7: Allow the dough to rise again
Cover the dough balls with a clean kitchen towel and let them rise again for 30 minutes, or until they have almost doubled in size.
Step 8: Preheat the oven and cook the egg white
While the dough is rising for the second time, preheat the oven to 190 degrees centigrade. Whisk the egg in a small bowl and set aside.
Step 9: Bake the scones
Before baking, brush the risen buns with the egg mixture to give them a golden colour. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown and hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Step 10: Cool and serve
Remove the cheese buns from the oven and let them cool on a wire rack. They're best served warm, so once they've cooled enough, call the family for dinner!
That's it - the easiest cheese bun recipe you can try making at home. Happy baking!
Tip: For extra flavour, add herbs, such as rosemary or thyme, to the dough or sprinkle on top before baking. And for a spicy twist, sprinkle some chilli flakes over the dough!
