Tikhanovskaya called on the world to prevent Russia from deploying nuclear weapons in Belarus

Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tihanovskaya condemned Moscow's intention to deploy nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus and called on the world to prevent Putin from doing so. Tikhanovskaia wrote this on Twitter.

She noted that the "threatening deployment" of nuclear weapons requires a response from the West. Tihanovskaya called for "adequate and strict sanctions against the dictatorial regimes of Alexander Lukashenko and Vladimir Putin as direct threats to international peace and security.

We also call on the world to demand the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Belarus and an end to Belarus' involvement in the Russian aggression against Ukraine," she wrote.

She pointed out that Russia's deployment of tactical nuclear weapons on the territory of Belarus would be a direct violation of the country's constitution and would grossly contradict the will of the Belarusian people to obtain the status of a non-nuclear state, expressed in the declaration on state sovereignty of Belarus in 1990.

Russia acts as an occupation force, violating national security and putting Belarus on a collision course with its neighbours and the international community," said the opposition activist.

Tikhanovskaya stressed that nuclear weapons deployed on the territory of Belarus would make the country a potential target for preventive or retaliatory strikes.

She also noted that the threatening situation has arisen because of Lukashenko, who has allowed such a development.

We call on the international community to demand that Russia stop this threatening deployment and impose adequate and strict sanctions on the Lukashenko and Putin regimes as direct threats to international peace and security. We also call on the world to demand the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Belarus and an end to Belarus' involvement in the Russian aggression against Ukraine," Tikhanovska wrote.
