Certain foods can negatively affect the health of this crucial organ.

Here are the top 5 "killer products" of the spleen

Alcohol

Excessive alcohol consumption is one of the most harmful habits for the spleen. Alcohol can cause inflammation and swelling, which can lead to a condition known as alcoholic spleen disease. This condition can impair the spleen's ability to function properly, leading to a weakened immune system and increased vulnerability to infections.

An article on the Healthline website suggests that while there isn't much research on this topic, some dietary changes are necessary if you have an enlarged spleen or want to avoid illnesses associated with the condition.

For example, excessive alcohol consumption can cause cirrhosis of the liver, which can lead to an enlarged spleen.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), characterised by excess fat deposition in the liver, is also associated with splenomegaly. Risk factors for developing NAFLD include obesity, diabetes, elevated blood fat levels, and metabolic syndrome, all of which can be caused or exacerbated by diet and lifestyle.

Processed foods

Highly processed foods such as fast food, tinned foods and some types of ready meals are often high in sodium and unhealthy fats. This can lead to high blood pressure, which puts extra strain on the spleen. In addition, these foods tend to be low in essential nutrients needed to keep the spleen healthy.

Sugary drinks

This was accompanied by splenomegaly, characterised by a 50% increase in spleen mass compared to mice fed a standard diet. The increase in spleen mass was associated with a significant improvement in red and white pulp area ratio, as well as plasma glucose and IL-6 levels.

The researchers concluded that eliminating splenomegaly with regular exercise and genistein treatment may have important implications for the clinical management of obesity caused by a high-fat, high-sugar diet.

Following a balanced diet is essential for spleen health and overall well-being. Including a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins and whole grains in your diet will help support spleen function and strengthen your immune system.

As always, the key is moderation, and it is important to remember that occasional consumption of the above foods and drinks is unlikely to cause significant harm. However,constant consumption can lead to problems.
