Ukrainian became the second woman in the world to receive the Fields Medal in mathematics

Ukrainian scientist Marina Vyazovskaya received the most prestigious mathematical award - the Fields Medal and became the second woman in history to receive this award.
This was reported in the International Mathematical Union.
The difference was obtained when solving the problem of packing balls in eight-dimensional space. It has been known since the 16th century; Kepler and Newton thought about it. Initially, the task was connected with the need to come up with the most effective way to lay cannonballs on the ships of the British navy.
In the future, the problem was included in the list of 23 unsolved mathematical problems, many famous scientists discussed its solution.
A total of four mathematicians received the prize this year. The other winners of this year's prize were the Korean-American mathematician Jun Hu, as well as French and British scientists Hugo Duminil-Copen and James Maynard.
The Fields Medal is called the Nobel Prize in Mathematics. It is awarded once every four years when specialists in mathematics reach the age of 40.
