We tell you how to make a safe insect spray with your own hands.

Protecting yourself and your loved ones from annoying insects is a must, especially in the warm season when they are most active.

Homemade repellent sprays can be as effective as store-bought sprays and do not contain harsh chemicals. They can also be tailored to suit specific needs and sensitivities.

Here's a simple guide to making your own repellent spray at home.

You will need:

Essential oils: There are various essential oils that insects do not like. Some of the most effective ones include:

  • lemon eucalyptus oil
  • lavender oil
  • peppermint oil
  • tea tree oil
  • citronella oil
  • rosemary oil

Hamamelis or distilled water: These serve as a carrier for the essential oils.
Vegetable glycerin (optional): It helps to mix the oils with the water.
Glass bottle with atomiser: Essential oils can degrade plastic over time, so glass is better.

Instructions:

Choose essential oils: Depending on what insects you want to repel and what scent you prefer, you can choose one or mix several essential oils. For example, lemon eucalyptus is particularly effective against mosquitoes, while lavender is soothing and repellent to moths, fleas and mosquitoes.

Mixing: In a bowl combine:

  • 20-25 drops of your chosen essential oil(s)
  • 2 tablespoons of witch hazel or distilled water
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable glycerin (if using).

Pour into a spray bottle: Using a funnel, pour the mixture into a glass spray bottle.

Top up with water: Fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water, leaving a little room at the top to shake the mixture.

Shakewell: Shake the spray well before each use to ensure the oils are well distributed.

Application: Spray directly onto clothing or exposed skin, avoiding contact with eyes and mouth. Remember that if you have sensitive skin, it is best to test on your skin first to make sure there is no reaction to the essential oils.

Tips and Precautions:

Storage: Store homemade repellent in a cool, dark place. Exposure to direct sunlight may reduce the potency of the essential oils.

Reapplication: Natural repellents tend to wear off faster than chemical repellents, so reapplication every 1-2 hours may be necessary for optimal protection.

Safety: Although essential oils are natural, they can be potent. You should use them in recommended amounts and keep them out of the reach of children.

Pregnancy and Children: Not all essential oils are safe for pregnant women and young children. Do thorough research or consult a health care professional if you are unsure.

Using this simple recipe, you can create an effective repellent spray at home that suits your preferences and needs.

Plus, there's an added bonus: many of these essential oils have therapeutic properties, so not only are you protecting yourself from insects, but you're also enjoying aromatherapy!
